Forest School

These sessions happen on our wellie Wednesdays in the garden area at Pre-School.

Forest Schools originated in Scandinavia in the 1950's. In 1995 visiting students saw the benefit of it for themselves and brought the idea back to Bridgewater College , since then Forest Schools have spread throughout England and Wales . Our Forest School leader holds an Advanced award in Forest School Leadership and a relevant outdoor First Aid certificate. The children learn though small achievable tasks. Through these freely chosen outdoor play activities, children learn some of the skills necessary for adult life, including social competence, problem solving, creative thinking, and safety skills.

These sessions include some tool use, on a ratio of 1:1. Research into how the brain works and different learning styles has convinced our staff that outdoor learning experiences are of great benefit to children. Many practitioners believe the outdoors to be a vital part of children's learning experiences.

Of course children's safety is of paramount importance; however the Forest School leader assesses risk to enable children, rather than removing experiences from children.
